As a country that was once the largest exporter of kapok fiber in the world, Indonesia is one of the countries with abundant natural resources. With the increase in technology, the value of the benefits of kapok is getting lower so that in the end it only becomes respiratory pollution for the surrounding community. This study aims to measure and analyze the crystallinity index value of kapok fiber and thermal stability through an oxidation-alkalization treatment process. The experimental method used is dissolving raw kapok in NaClO-NaOH solution with various concentrations of NaClO. Raw kapok and treated kapok fiber are then characterized by several instruments. The results obtained are the highest crystallinity index in kapok fiber with solvent concentrations of 0.5 and 0.3 N with index values of 49.84 and 47.05, respectively. The increase in the crystallinity index is evidenced by the results of FTIR characterization where there is a decrease in non-cellulose compounds. It is also proven by SEM morphology where fiber shrinkage has occurred which indicates a change from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Fiber kapok treatment results have a better level of thermal stability. © 2023 Author(s).
