While brackishwater aquaculture contributes positively to socio-economic development, it often faces criticism regarding its negative environmental impacts. These environmental issues can be mitigated by focusing on sustainable development practices. Therefore, identifying sustainable practices in brackishwater aquaculture is crucial. To address this need, this study introduces a rapid assessment method for brackishwater aquaculture, designed to evaluate the sustainability status of brackishwater aquaculture in coastal areas. The main objective of this study is to assess the sustainability of brackishwater aquaculture development using the Rap-BWAC tool, with West Halmahera, Indonesia, serving as the model area. Both primary and secondary data were utilized in this research. The sustainability analysis of brackishwater fisheries management employed a multidimensional scaling method, with brackishwater aquaculture serving as the model tool. This analysis focused on the ecological, economic, social, technological, and institutional dimensions. The results indicate that the sustainability status of brackishwater aquaculture in West Halmahera shows a good sustainability index for the ecological, economic, and institutional dimensions. However, the social dimension reflects poor sustainability status, while the technological dimension indicates moderate sustainability. The Rap-BWAC can serve as a valuable tool for monitoring the sustainability of brackishwater aquaculture in other regions as well. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
