Purpose – This study aims to provide a conceptual multidimensional classification of individual awareness, risk management, cyber resilience and technology adoption in a coherent synthetic framework. Design/methodology/approach – The research questions were formulated to answer the research objectives following the PRISMA guidelines through identification, screening, eligibility and inclusion of 24 articles that matched the research theme from the initial 325 articles. Findings – This study reveals the supporting factors and threats to the main vulnerabilities of consumers and MSMEs in digital commerce, in addition to consumer self-protection strategies and holistic and sustainable cyber resilience in facing the evolution of cybersecurity threats. Research limitations/implications – Research on cybersecurity awareness needs to be expanded and not only focused on developed countries, where SMEs in developing countries are experiencing rapid e-commerce growth but are faced with resource and governance challenges. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this literature study is the first to conceptually design a multidimensional classification structure related to individual awareness, mitigation strategies, cyber resilience and a coherent synthesis framework. © 2026 Emerald Publishing Limited
